The Star on Monday reported Toronto is in a long-term deal with a, but the city officials have been trying to negotiate prices for its drugs. It's unclear what will happen if they don't agree.
Last week, the Toronto Star's Toronto business unit said it would sell the rights to Viagra and similar erectile dysfunction drugs, including Cialis, and sell generic versions of those drugs for free. The agreement was announced Monday by a group of Toronto-based companies whose CEO, Michael Pearson, was in his second year as CEO of Toronto's business unit. According to the Toronto Star, the deal, which has been in the news since its announcement in January, will provide the city with a deal that will allow it to make more inroads in the market.
It's unclear if the deal will be reached by the Toronto Star, however, although it is possible that the deal could not be reached, in the hopes of keeping the city from having to pay more.
In an exclusive interview with the Star, Toronto's senior executive director of business development, Eric Bercow, said the city would have to pay a $60 million premium to get the deal done. He acknowledged the city's "strong financial constraints" were preventing it from making more inroads in the market.
But he said the deal was not one that would have helped if the city had a clear market presence. "It was just something that was clearly set up to address the issue of price."
The deal also came a few months after a rival company, Pfizer, began offering generic erectile dysfunction medications. The deal was in late December, and Pfizer, which had already announced plans to launch its own generic erectile dysfunction drugs in the U. S., has said it could expand to the U. S. market by the end of the year.
"We've been trying to get in touch with the companies to see what the market will look like," Bercow said in an interview with the Star. "We have no plans to do anything with our generic products or our branded products."
The deal also has other implications for Toronto.
"We are having conversations about how the deal could impact our business," said Bercow, who is also CEO of the Toronto-based Canadian International Business Corporation.
He said he has also said he would be interested in working with the companies to get into the market and to be able to offer a "very competitive and attractive" deal, even if it didn't happen to be that the city would not have to pay for the drugs it sold. "You don't have to pay."
In the days after its announcement, Pfizer said it would not pay for the drugs it sold, which it had previously said was "not a direct purchase" of the drugs. It also declined to say whether the company also paid for the drugs.
In response to questions about the deal, Bercow said he believed the deal could be reached in a few years. "The company has been in discussions with its competitors and is looking to create a competitive product to sell."
He also said the deal with the Toronto Star was "not a big deal" for the city and that the deal would help reduce the risk of a lawsuit against Pfizer. "We have to make sure we are making a fair profit. We have no plans to make a fair profit."
Bercow also said the deal is likely to be in the works by the end of the year, with the City of Toronto taking a "firm and fair" approach when it comes to pricing.
